The name hippopotamus comes from ancient Greek for "river horse," and the animal spends up to 16 hours a day submerged in African rivers and lakes. Given that, it seems reasonable to assume it's a strong swimmer. It isn't. A
Body Built to Sink, Not Swim
Most
aquatic mammals seals, otters, whales are built to be buoyant. Hippos are the
opposite. Their bones are unusually dense, and their bodies carry relatively
little of the fat layer that helps other animals float. Dropped into deep
water, a hippo doesn't bob; it sinks toward the bottom.
Rather
than treating that as a problem, hippos use it. Researchers studying hippo
locomotion have documented a gait sometimes called an underwater gallop: the
hippo pushes off the riverbed with its hind legs, briefly loses contact with

An
Unlikely Family Reunion: Cousins of the Whale
For
much of the 20th century, scientists classified hippos alongside pigs, based on
some shared anatomical features. Genetic evidence eventually overturned that
assumption. Molecular studies, later supported by fossil discoveries, showed
that hippos are more closely related to cetaceans whales, dolphins and
porpoises than to any other living mammal group.
The
two lineages are thought to share a common, semi-aquatic ancestor from roughly

reddish skin secretion, sometimes called "blood sweat," which isn't
actually sweat or blood it functions more like a natural sunscreen and
antimicrobial coating that helps protect their skin.
Once
night falls, hippos leave the water to graze, sometimes walking several
kilometers inland to reach grassland. A single adult can eat around 35–40 kg of
grass in a night a modest amount for an animal its size, largely because hippos
are far less active than land mammals of comparable weight, saving most of
their energy for the water.
An
Ecosystem Engineer With a Double Edge
That
nightly commute between land and water turns out to matter well beyond the
hippo itself. By grazing on land and then defecating heavily in rivers and
pools, hippos transport large quantities of nutrients from the surrounding
grassland directly into aquatic ecosystems.
In
Kenya's Mara River, researchers have measured this effect directly. A 2019
study found that the roughly 4,000 hippos living along the river deposit close
to 400 kg of silica into the water daily through their waste a mineral that
downstream diatoms (a type of algae) rely on to build their cell walls,
ultimately supporting the food web that feeds fish in Lake Victoria.
But
the same nutrient loading has a darker side. A separate study, led by
researchers from Yale University and the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies,
found that hippo waste accumulating in shallow pools during dry periods can be
flushed downstream by heavy rains, depleting dissolved oxygen in the river and
triggering fish die-offs. Over three years of monitoring, the team recorded
dissolved oxygen crashes during the large majority of flushing events, with
several severe enough to kill fish outright. The researchers noted this is
likely a natural process that shaped African river ecosystems long before hippo
populations were reduced across much of their historical range meaning the
"problem" is really evidence of how influential hippos once were, and
often still are, in the rivers they inhabit.
Threats
Facing a Species That Isn't Rare, but Isn't Safe
The
common hippopotamus is classified as Vulnerable by the IUCN, a
middle-tier warning that reflects real, ongoing pressure without indicating the
species is close to extinction across its whole range. The two biggest drivers
are habitat loss, as wetlands and rivers are converted for agriculture and
settlement, and hunting both for meat and for hippo canine teeth, which are
traded as a legal but sometimes loosely regulated ivory substitute.
Regional
conflict has hit some populations especially hard. In the Democratic Republic
of Congo, hippo numbers dropped by more than 95% in parts of the country during
a period of civil unrest and intense hunting in the early 2000s. Mozambique saw
