A tiger is easy to recognize. Its orange coat, dark stripes, massive paws and powerful build have made it one of the most recognizable animals on Earth.

But the most interesting thing about a tiger is not simply how powerful it is.

The Survival Problem: A Tiger Needs More Than a Forest

When people imagine tiger habitat, they often picture an enormous forest filled with trees.

Trees are important, but they are not enough.

A tiger needs a landscape that can continually provide prey, cover, water and enough space to move and reproduce. If a forest remains standing but its large herbivores disappear, the habitat can become much less useful to a tiger.

This is why prey density has such a strong influence on tiger ecology.

IUCN's Cat Specialist Group reports that female home ranges in prey-rich Chitwan, Nepal, can average roughly 10–39 km², while female ranges in parts of the Russian Far East can reach 100–400 km² where prey is more scattered. Male ranges can be considerably larger.

The difference reveals something important:

A tiger's territory is partly a map of where enough food can be found.

The animal isn't choosing a territory because it looks beautiful.

It is effectively solving an energy equation.

Tigers are often described simply as powerful predators, but power alone does not explain how they hunt.

The tiger uses cover, terrain and timing to reduce the distance it must cross during the final attack. Once the attack begins, its large body, powerful forelimbs and jaws become important.

Connectivity also allows individuals to move between populations.

A tiger population trapped in a small isolated patch may survive for years, but isolation can reduce opportunities for genetic exchange and make the population more vulnerable to local disasters.

The problem has become particularly visible in some isolated populations.

The tiger is also unusual among large cats in its relationship with water.

Tigers are capable swimmers and may cross rivers and other bodies of water. Their habitat can include wetlands, river systems and even mangrove environments, rather than being limited to dry forests.

This matters because tiger habitat is better understood as a landscape mosaic.

  • Other connected habitats

What matters is whether the overall landscape provides the resources and conditions the animal needs.

Raising a Tiger Is a Long-Term Investment

A newborn cub is not.

The meal does not necessarily end quickly.

Tigers have been targeted for their skins and body parts, and illegal trade has contributed to the species' decline.

Poaching can also damage the prey community through indiscriminate trapping.

That creates a double problem:

The tiger can be killed directly, while its food supply can be reduced at the same time.

Human-tiger conflict

Tigers and people increasingly share fragmented landscapes.

When tigers encounter livestock or people, the result can be dangerous for both sides.

Why Tiger Conservation Is More Complicated Than

Counting Tigers

Counting animals is essential.

But numbers alone don't tell the whole story.

Imagine two populations containing the same number of tigers.

Population A has:

  • abundant prey,
  • connected habitat,
  • breeding females,
  • safe corridors,
  • low poaching pressure.

Population B has:

  • declining prey,
  • isolated habitat,
  • high human conflict,
  • few breeding adults,
  • heavy poaching pressure.

The number on the spreadsheet might look similar.

Their futures would not be similar.

This is why the IUCN Green Status of Species is such an interesting development.

The Red List asks an important question:

How close is the species to extinction?

The Green Status asks another:

How far has the species recovered, and how much ecological recovery remains possible?

For tigers, the answer is both alarming and encouraging.

The 2025 assessment classified the species as Critically Depleted, but rated its conservation legacy as high and found meaningful potential for future recovery.

The Tiger Recovery Story Is Already Happening

The tiger's story is not only about decline.

Some populations are recovering.

India's 2022 national tiger assessment estimated 3,682 tigers, compared with 2,967 in 2018. The assessment used a combination of ground surveys, habitat information and camera trapping, with 3,080 individual tigers identified during the 2022 survey effort.

And there is even more recent evidence from Nepal.

In July 2026, Nepal announced a national estimate of 429 wild tigers, up from 355 in 2022, 235 in 2018 and 121 in 2009.

These numbers don't mean the global tiger crisis is solved.

They demonstrate something more valuable:

Tiger populations can recover when the conditions around them improve.


How Scientists Count an Animal That Hides From

Them

A tiger is not easy to count by simply walking through a forest.

Modern monitoring therefore relies heavily on technology and statistical methods.

Camera traps are especially useful.

A motion-triggered camera can photograph an animal without a researcher needing to see it directly.

And because individual tiger stripe patterns are distinctive, photographs can sometimes be matched to individual animals.

India's national tiger monitoring program combines multiple approaches, including ground surveys, remote sensing, camera trapping and annual monitoring. The 2022 assessment involved more than 6.41 lakh km of survey effort and recorded more than 32,800 camera-trap images in the monitoring program.

This is a major shift from simply asking:

“Did anyone see a tiger?”

Scientists can now ask much more sophisticated questions:

  • Which individuals are present?
  • Where do they move?
  • How many cubs survive?
  • Which areas contain breeding females?
  • How does tiger density change with prey?
  • Are populations connected?
  • Are numbers increasing or decreasing?

The tiger has become one of the world's most intensively monitored large carnivores.


Taxonomy: How Many Tiger Subspecies Are There?

This is an area where older animal articles can easily become misleading.

Traditional classifications commonly describe six living tiger subspecies:

  • Bengal tiger
  • Amur tiger
  • Indochinese tiger
  • Malayan tiger
  • Sumatran tiger
  • South China tiger

Three historically recognized forms—the Bali, Javan and Caspian tigers—are extinct.

However, tiger taxonomy is currently under review.

The 2022 IUCN Red List assessment notes that genetic evidence supports recognition of six extant subspecies, while acknowledging that the interpretation of available data remains under review by the IUCN Cat Specialist Group.

So rather than presenting one classification as permanently settled, it is more accurate to say that six living subspecies remain the commonly referenced genetic classification in current IUCN material, while taxonomy continues to be evaluated.

That distinction matters because science changes as better genetic evidence becomes available.

Conservation Status: Endangered, But Not a Lost

Cause

The tiger is currently classified as Endangered on the IUCN Red List.

The 2022 Red List assessment estimated the global population at approximately 3,726–5,578 individuals, with an estimated 2,608–3,905 mature individuals. It also cautioned that estimates from different countries vary in methodology and timing.

Since then, updated national assessments have documented increases in several important tiger populations.

This is why the most accurate description of the tiger's current situation is neither:

“Tigers are disappearing everywhere.”

nor:

“Tigers have been saved.”

The reality is more complicated.

Some populations are recovering. Others remain severely depleted or have disappeared.

The 2025 IUCN Green Status assessment found that tigers are extinct in nine of the 24 spatial units it evaluated and remain threatened in every spatial unit where they persist. At the same time, it estimated that restoring suitable historical habitat could potentially support more than 25,000 wild tigers under a highly ambitious recovery scenario.

That is the difference between survival and recovery.

The latest conservation evidence gives us an unusually balanced picture. Tigers remain Endangered and severely depleted across much of their historical range, yet conservation has already prevented a much greater collapse. India, Nepal and other parts of Asia show that recovery is possible when protection, habitat, prey, connectivity and community participation work together.

The real measure of success, then, is not simply how many tiger photographs appear on a camera trap.

It is whether the landscape can once again support a tiger as a wild predator with enough space, prey and freedom to perform its natural ecological role.

That is the bigger story behind the stripes.
