A tiger is easy to recognize. Its orange coat, dark stripes, massive paws and powerful build have made it one of the most recognizable animals on Earth.

The Survival Problem: A Tiger Needs More Than a Forest
When people imagine tiger habitat, they often
picture an enormous forest filled with trees.
Trees are important, but they are not enough.
A tiger needs a landscape that can continually

The Tiger Recovery Story Is Already Happening
The tiger's story is not only about decline.
Some populations are recovering.
India's 2022 national tiger assessment
estimated 3,682 tigers,
compared with 2,967 in 2018. The assessment used a combination of ground
surveys, habitat information and camera trapping, with 3,080 individual tigers
identified during the 2022 survey effort.
And there is even more recent evidence from
Nepal.
In July 2026, Nepal announced a national
estimate of 429 wild tigers,
up from 355 in 2022, 235 in 2018 and 121 in 2009.
These numbers don't mean the global tiger
crisis is solved.
They demonstrate something more valuable:

populations can recover when the conditions around them improve.

trapping and annual monitoring. The 2022 assessment involved more than 6.41 lakh km of survey effort and
recorded more than 32,800 camera-trap
images in the monitoring program.
This is a major shift from simply asking:
“Did anyone see a tiger?”
