ENDANGERED SPECIES
Endangered species are those species of animals and birds that are about to extinct shortly. Their number is so small that they are susceptible to extinction. The main reason for the extinction of animals is human activities.
We should make
necessary efforts to take control of the extinction of species. Such as;
implementing rules and regulations, retarding illegal hunting, taking
endangered species to safe places, and conducting awareness messages for the
best understanding.
Here are specific examples of threatened
species :
- Panda
( Ailuropoda melaleuca)-Generally found in China is included
as an endangered species because of the destruction of its habitat due to
deforestation and human activities
- Bengal
Tiger (Panthera tigris tigris)-It was mostly found in the Indian
sub-continent but eventually began to lessen in number because of overhunting
and destruction of habitat. Nowadays, this magnificent specie is near extinction.
- Black
Rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis)-African native giant animal is almost
extinct due to overhunting for its precious horn. Only a few individuals of
this species remain and are proclaimed to be highly endangered species on planet Earth.
- Blue
Whale (Balaenoptera musculus)-Regardless of being the largest mammal
on planet Earth, blue whale is highly impacted by human activities. The main
reason for the decrease in the number of whales is overhunting and striking
with cargo ships.
- Hawksbill sea Turtle, generally found in tropical regions is also threatened to be extinct shortly. It is all because of overhunting due to its shell.
Causes of extinction of species:
- Habitat
destruction:
Any
change in habitat affects the growth of living organisms in that area. So
animals cannot reproduce and increase their population, easily.
- Change
in weather:
The
temperature of Earth is changing rapidly, this change in weather also affects
the growth of animals.
This change in climate is mainly due to human activities such as;
→ Deforestation (humans are cutting
forests for more land and food)
→Polluting water sources(pouring
sewerage water directly into lakes and rivers that causes the death of aquatic
life)
→Polluting atmosphere (CFC gases and
smoke released from automobiles also pollutes the air that affects living
organisms and causes a change in weather in the form of global warming)
- Overpopulation: Human population is increasing daily, which is why more and more land and food are required for living. To get
more space and food humans are killing animals and destroying their habitats
causing retardation in the population of animals and reptiles on Earth.
- Natural
disasters:
Organisms
on Earth are also affected by natural disasters like; floods, volcanic
eruptions, earthquakes, lightning(that causes fire in forests) and meteor
attacks, etc.
- Human
activities:
Humans
also play an important role in the extinction of living organisms and
destroying natural habitat
Effects of extinction
Extinction may cause many serious
problems for humans in the future and we will be helpless. A few predictions
about the effects of the extinction of animals are given below :
- As we know, every specie play an important
role in maintaining the ecosystem. If any of them is diminished then the
balance of nature may disturb which can be very problematic. Extinction of any
specie may cause over-population of any other specie.
- Each specie act as a food source for other
species, which may cause disturbance in the food chain if eliminated and hence
also affect the growth of other species.
- Many animals are being used by scientists for
the production of medicine against many severe decreases. So the extinction of
any specie can be very dangerous in the future with time.
- Many pharmaceutical companies use different
mammals to prepare medicines which are then exported to other countries and
help in the establishment of the economy of a country. So the extinction of a
specific specie may cause an economic crisis in a country.
Preventions from extinction:
The ratio of extinction can be reduced by adopting the following
terms:
- Public awareness: People are unknowingly
destroying their habitats, and awareness messages can be very beneficial for
preventing extinction and protecting the precious endangered specie.
- Preventing overhunting: Overhunting is also a main cause of extinction of species, people hunt some rare and precious animals and destroy the habitat. That’s why, many animals are threatened and near to extinct.
- Stopping illegal trading: Hunters are used to smuggle rare animals and sell them in the black market for a big profit. Regardless of thinking about habitat destruction. Government should stop these smugglers so that animals can be prevented from being extinct.
- Growth control: Human population growth is
increasing day by day hence more space is occupied and forests are eliminated
destroying habitat. When a habitat is destroyed the source of food is also
destroyed and hence animals could not survive without food so they also die.
- Improvement in the syllabus: Government should
improve the syllabus and teachers must change their teaching pattern. So,
people should have basic knowledge about these social problems.
As Benjamin Franklin says:
“ An
investment in knowledge pays the best interest. “
What role can a citizen play to stop
extinction?
- People can play an important role in stopping the extinction of species by adopting the following steps:
- People can help stop extinction by attaching with different organizations trying to help endangered species and donating funds to those organizations for their encouragement.
- Citizens should take a part in restoring the
damaged habitat by planting trees and keeping the surroundings clean.
- People also can participate in protecting
endangered species by giving awareness to other people living in near places.
What role should government play to save endangered species?
- Government should take serious steps to protect endangered species as follows:
- Government should implement strict rules and
regulations to protect endangered species.
- Government should cooperate with NGOs and must
give them donations for better work and encouragement.
- Government should take fine those who did not
follow the rules.
- Government must take an eye on their staff for
better working and implementation of rules and laws.
We
should take care of nature and our habitats. As it is said:
“The greatness of a nation can be judged by
the way its animals are treated.”
Charles Darwin
