An Unusual Bear Within an Omnivorous Family
Most bears are opportunistic omnivores. Brown
bears eat berries, roots, fish and the occasional carcass. Even the giant
panda, despite eating almost nothing but bamboo, retains a digestive system

Real Hibernation, but Only for Expectant Mothers
There's an important exception, and it's
genuinely remarkable: pregnant female polar bears.
In autumn, pregnant females dig maternity dens in
snowdrifts and enter a state of true fasting hibernation that can last up to
eight months. During this period, they don't eat, drink, urinate or defecate,
relying entirely on stored fat, including a delayed-implantation strategy in
which a fertilized egg only begins developing once the female has accumulated
enough fat to sustain both herself and future cubs. Inside the den, she gives

This is the closest thing to classic hibernation
in polar bear biology, and it only happens in this one narrow context.
Everywhere else males, non-pregnant females, and bears simply waiting out an
ice-free summer the "walking hibernation" label doesn't hold up under
scrutiny.
Why This Distinction Matters as the Arctic Warms
If polar bears genuinely could throttle down
their metabolism during food-scarce periods, a longer ice-free season each year
might be survivable without major consequences. The research suggests they
can't, at least not to any meaningful degree outside of maternal denning.
That has direct consequences. As sea ice breaks
up earlier in spring and reforms later in fall across much of the Arctic, bears
face longer stretches without reliable access to seals. Without a metabolic
safety valve, that time is spent depleting fat reserves at something close to
the ordinary rate, which shows up in the data: declining body condition, lower
